The Light That Shines Through
Four-year-old, Melissa Belba, was diagnosed with leukemia at birth. From there, she faced challenges such as chemotherapy and heart transplant. Devastation arose from how much the little girl endured. Over those four years, Melissa’s parents felt desperate at the thought of losing their first-born child. After four long years, Melissa is running around with other children and is passing on her bravery to her new baby brother.
While climbing the mountain of life, there are bound to be both steady roads as well at tumbling rocks. When it seems like the world is doing everything it can to throw an avalanche at you, that’s when we need to unleash our most powerful weapon: hope.
Hope is an act to bring light through the cracks of darkness. Sometimes though, that light can be blinding to the point where the unfavorable outcome dematerializes. This idea of wishing for certain things, according to some therapists, can set us up for defeat. By reaching too far into probabilities versus reality, one can let go of the truth behind certain outcomes. Hopes that look pretty, at first sight, can have the deceiving manner of not always coming true the way initially desired. Without this though, life can become a lonely journey with nothing to aspire for. Is that really what we want?
For decades, the idea of hope has helped pain not to vanish, but to ease and bring calmness. Its purpose is to help one see positive amid angst. Here, one might argue how hope is deceiving to the mind. Psychologists have something different to say.
It is taught from a young age that the state of one’s being is heavily dependent on their mental state. It’s understandable to not see the light when enclosed in darkness. At that moment, it seems like there is no weapon to defeat the darkness that has conquered your mind. Thoughts filled with dread may seem like the rational resort during the conflict but it won’t result in post-happiness. If that darkness is faced by the light though, it doesn’t stand a chance. Turning your head and looking to the positive the slightest bit can have an outstanding effect. It may seem difficult at first, but it is worth it in the long run. By having a positive mindset, misery starts to fade away and it is replaced by a new warming feeling. This entire process is regarded as a simple concept - being hopeful.
Hope is the weapon against the wrath of hardship. Controversy on this topic about finding the stability between aspiration and reality can be resolved by reaching a balance. There is a fine line between wishing for the positive and letting it control your mind. If that balance is found, just the right amount of light will emerge from the cracks of darkness and illuminate the road ahead.

Reflection:
The toughest part of this composition for me was getting started. It took me a while to decide on a topic initially and I also had trouble deciding on which genre would be the “perfect” way to start of my MGRP. Eventually, I decided to go with my original idea: an editorial. While writing this piece, I found that I enjoy writing editorials. It gives the chance to show your view on the discussed topic as well as provide any required solution for possible controversy. As I wrote my editorial, I hoped to convey the idea about the importance and an all-round portraying of the vast concept of hope. I choose to compare the view I did on the positive and negative side of hope because I think it is an issue that most people do not acknowledge. I, myself, did not think of hope in this aspect before I did research. I now see how crucial hope is to a happy journey through life. I hope to acquire more knowledge like this to grow my understanding throughout the project. I hope you like reading my editorial!
